Veoh Wins Copyright Infringement Lawsuit

A federal judge in San Jose ruled today that video-sharing site Veoh was not liable for copyrighted material uploaded to its site, dismissing an early 2006 case filed against it by Io Group, an adult video firm. The site pleaded its defense under the “safe harbor” provisions of DMCA copyright law, which meant it could be safe as long as it removed the infringing video when alerted by the copyright holder, which the judge said that Veoh was doing.

iPhone Security Flaw Exposes Private Data

A security flaw in Apple Inc’s iPhone allows unauthorized users to gain easy access to private contacts and e-mails even when the device is locked, but the company said a fix is on the way.
Popular technology blog Gizmodo and an online forum run by the Mac Rumors site showed that it took only three taps to gain access to locked iPhones, which run the latest 2.02 iPhone software.

Microsoft Corp released on Wednesday a second test version of Internet Explorer 8, delivering a feature-complete upgrade to the world’s most widely used Web browser. The world’s largest software maker said the latest version — beta 2 — of Internet Explorer, which has a market share of about 75 percent, comes with new features to enhance privacy, ease-of-use, and security.

Aaron Sorkin to Pen Facebook Film

Oracle Decides on Epstein for Chief Financial Officer

Oracle Corp. said it has recruited Jeff Epstein to serve as chief financial officer of the software company. Mr. Epstein, who will also become an executive vice president, assumes a title that has been held since November 2005 by Safra Catz, Oracle’s co-president. He will report to Ms. Catz.

ESPN Helps The Active Network Raise $80 Million More

The Active Network , a network of sites focused on getting people involved in sports and other activities, has raised an additional $80 million in a Series F round led by ESPN and joined by Canaan Partners , North Bridge Venture Partners , and Performance Equity Partners .
The round brings San Diego-based company’s total to over $275 million since its founding in 1998 as a registration site for endurance races.

Online dating site SpeedDate has raised $6 million in a Series B funding round led by Menlo Ventures. SpeedDate offers users a series of 3 minute mini-dates, during which they can converse through video, audio, and a chat box. If both partners decide they were a good match when prompted at the end of the date, they can continue communicating through the site until they make the jump to real life.

StudioNow Raises $2 Million for Professional-Quality Video Service

StudioNow has raised $2 million as part of a first round of funding to finance its online site for creating professional-quality videos at inexpensive prices.The money came from existing investors and Clayton Associates, a Franklin, Tenn.-based private equity firm. The investment now brings the total first round investment to $4.1 million.Clayton Associates’ additional capital infusion in StudioNow brings the total Series A investment in the company to $4.1 million.
