Google is introducing a new Web browser called Google Chrome today. The beta version is available in more than 100 countries, but right now, it’s only available for Windows. Mac and Linux versions are still being developed. Google Chrome was designed to quickly handle complex, video-rich programs. The launch comes on the heels of Microsoft’s introduction of Internet Explorer 8 and some say Google will launch Chrome because it worries that Internet Explorer 8 is designed to stymie Google’s search engine.

Nokia’s “Comes With Music” To Debut In UK

Nokia provided some of the earliest launch details for its long-delayed Comes With Music service, its cooperative attempt at changing the business model for mobile music. The feature will first launch as an exclusive for UK cellphone retailer Carphone Warehouse and will first be available only through a Comes With Music edition of Nokia’s 5310 XpressMusic; customers will pay extra for the phone itself but receive a year’s worth of unlimited Windows Media-formatted music downloads that they can keep even if they choose not to renew.

Hulu Launches Fall Lineup, Premieres Before TV Broadcast

Hulu on Tuesday announced that it has launched its Fall Premiere Lineup, which over the next seven weeks, will be the place to find season premieres of Prison Break, Bones, House, Heroes, The Office and 30 Rock. To build up the hype around new shows or those in their second season, Hulu will also debut the first episode of Knight Rider, Lipstick Jungle, Chuck and Life, one week before they air on broadcast television.

Internet Traffic Begins to Bypass the U.S.

Invented by American computer scientists during the 1970s, the Internet has been embraced around the globe. During the network’s first three decades, most Internet traffic flowed through the United States. In many cases, data sent between two locations within a given country also passed through the United States. Engineers who help run the Internet said that it would have been impossible for the United States to maintain its hegemony over the long run because of the very nature of the Internet; it has no central point of control.

Music Video is Reinvented on the Web

The first time Arcade Fire performed in Paris, Mathieu Saura stood outside the venue, holding up a sign that read, “Please, we want to come to the show.” The band’s bassist, Richard Reed Perry, got them in, and ever since, Saura might as well have not left. Under the name Vincent Moon, he’s gone from a fan begging for tickets to an in-demand filmmaker who has revolutionized music video. His films are stripped down, intimate videotaped performances – shot in one take, often of an act simply strolling down a street or playing in a parking lot. More than a hundred musicians – from Arcade Fire to REM – have flocked to work with him on the so-dubbed “Take-Away Shows,” part of the Web site La Blogotheque.

Global Chip Sales Rise 7.6 Percent in July

Global semiconductor sales rose 7.6 percent in July from the previous year, helped by strong growth in consumer electronics, personal computers and cell phones, an industry group said.
Worldwide sales were $22.178 billion, up from $20.603 billion a year ago, the Semiconductor Industry Association said in a monthly report. Excluding memory products, semiconductor sales increased by 11.6 percent year-on-year and by 3.2 percent sequentially.The 7.6 percent increase is down slightly from the 8 percent increase marked in June.

Picasa Refresh Brings Facial Recognition

In the anticipated release of Google’s new and improved Picasa , the company will offer facial recognition technology to help you identify friends and family in your pictures without requiring you to tag them by-hand each time you see them. Launching at noon PDT today, Picasa’s facial recognition technology will ask you to identify people in your pictures that you haven’t tagged yet. Once you do and start uploading more pictures, Picasa starts suggesting tags for people based on the similarity between their face in the picture and the tags you already put in place for them.
